English as a Second Language

January 15, 2014

The Delphian School’s English as a Second Language program provides students who speak a language other than English with an excellent opportunity.  Not only is the student learning from teachers who speak English as their first language, he or she is fully immersed in the English language.

Students don’t just learn English as part of our ESL program; they also learn the study philosophy around which Delphian is based.  This means they learn how to learn any subject effectively and independently – using Delphian’s study methods.

Students attending beginning ESL classes over the summer have the opportunity to find out more about Delphian.  Attending the six-week summer camp session of ESL gives our students the tools they need to continue on at Delphian for the rest of their high school career.

Even if a student only attends the Summer at Delphi ESL program, they will gain valuable knowledge that will benefit them for life.  They will attain a knowledge of the English language, but they will also find out how to use the effective study methods utilized by each and every one of our students.

The first step Delphian takes in helping students gain the ability to learn on their own is: empowering them as students.  To find out the rest of the steps utilized in the Delphian study philosophy, and to learn more about the English as a Second Language program, go to www.Delphian.org.

Delphian Summer Program

March 25, 2013

In the Delphian summer program, we offer new students a unique opportunity to work on a one-on-one basis as needed on an academic program tailored just for them.

After a student has mastered the basic courses and classes we offer (which encompass the subject of how to study) they can brush up on any topic of study they feel weak on, start on advanced studies in a variety of subjects, or take the opportunity to study new subjects.  We offer over 250 courses and classes every summer.

Not do we provide academic fodder for our students, we provide weekend activities both off and on campus.  These activities range from white-water rafting to camping, from shopping to hiking.

We are home to students from many countries other than the United States – like Japan, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, Italy, Germany, Canada, Austria, France, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Turkey, Brazil, Philippines, Australia, South Africa, Switzerland, and Russia.  Our students get the opportunity to experience a variety of cultures and make friends from all around the world.

Additionally, our program for beginning ESL is available during the summer program.  This gives English as a second language students the opportunity to learn the language, and learn the unique study techniques Delphian offers.  It also gives students who are just learning English the opportunity to talk with native speakers, while involved in every day and after school activities.

The summer program is an opportunity for students to learn about the Delphian School, to meet children from all around the world, to learn about new cultures, to learn new languages, to discover new academic topics, and to have plenty of fun while doing it.

Delphian School ESL Program

February 12, 2013

The Delphian School is attended by children from many different countries, who speak a wide variety of languages.  This makes our English as a Second Language program important for those who are not native English-speakers, and wish be competitive in English-speaking countries.  To accomplish this, we have found it is necessary for a student to understand and speak the language, as well as have the ability to increase their vocabulary with further study of the language.  This is why the first step in our ESL program is a course which improves the students’ ability to study.  The course itself requires the student achieve a specific level of vocabulary, which our students attain by studying vocabulary-building reading, writing, and conversation courses.  Once our student has prepared for and taken this course for effective study, their ability to learn new words in the English language increases.

Our ESL program is based on the students’ competence in the English language – not on how long they have attended classes.  After they take the course on effective study, their understanding of which words to use at which moment develops through conversation, reading, writing, and dictionary use.  Our goal is to teach our ESL students to apply what they have learned in class – not for them to learn something for a test and then forget it again.

The beginning ESL program is available only during our summer program.  However, our summer program isn’t all ESL classes.  The summer program is designed to challenge students both in and out of the classroom with academics, sports camps, weekend trips, and more.  Every year, approximately 300 students attend this summer program from across the US and from other countries like Japan, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, Italy, Germany, Canada, Austria, France, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Turkey, Brazil, Philippines,  Australia, South Africa, Switzerland, and Russia.

Our intermediate level ESL program is available year-round.  In this program, we provide education in basic English reading, writing, culture, and conversation.  Students completing the program are then placed in the same class as native English-speaking students.  These students may not speak perfect English, but after our ESL program their English speaking ability is developed enough to be competitive in a class of native English speakers.

English As a Second Language

January 29, 2010

The Delphian School offers a strong English-as-a-Second-Language program year-round to students from the ages of eight through eighteen.

Our goal is to help ESL students become competitive with American students in their pursuit of an American high school and college or university education. We do this by providing a well-rounded education in basic English reading, writing, culture and conversation. Students finishing The Delphian School ESL Program would then be placed in the same class as native English-speaking students. The ESL students’ English at this point would not be perfect, but the students would be competitive in that class with native English speakers.

Intermediate level ESL students who qualify can enroll at any time during the regular school year program or during the summer program (based on school availability). Students below intermediate level must first enroll in the school’s Summer Program, as beginning ESL is not offered during the regular school year.

Please contact our Admissions Office for detailed information on qualifications for Intermediate ESL. Most beginning ESL students who attend the six-week summer program can qualify for Intermediate ESL by the beginning of the fall term.
