Diet at Delphian

July 23, 2013

A nutritious diet is essential to students around the world – and with an international student body, providing excellent nutrition to all students is vital at Delphian.  This is why we provide food that is far above the normal “cafeteria-style” food expected at any school.

Daily meals are provided by Sage Dining, a dining service which specializes not only in well-balanced menus, but in flavorful, fresh and varied meals.  Each meal is cooked from scratch – often from locally grown, organic produce.  The menus provided by this service are constantly changing and are created specifically for the Delphian community.  Each season they feature the freshest products available for that time of year, here in the Pacific Northwest.  There are vegan and vegetarian options offered at many meals and organic vegetables and greens offered at the salad bar.

Our dining facility is a place for students and faculty alike to eat and relax, while discussing classes, collaborating, or simply enjoying the view of the oak and fir forest surrounding the school.  Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in this spacious environment.

Constantly striving to improve the quality of food we serve to our students and faculty, Delphian provides the following:

  • No hydrogenated oils are used during meal preparation.
  • Freshly ground sea salt is provided to season food.
  • Only cage-free eggs and hormone and antibiotic-free milk are served.
  • Organic peanut butter is available in the snack room.  This is peanut butter that is free from hydrogenated oils and sugar additives.
  • Only hormone and anti-biotic free pork is served.
  • Gourmet meat is purchased locally from Carlton Farms whenever possible.  This local farm uses no artificial ingredients, coloring, hormones or preservatives in their meat.

We provide an excellent educational environment at Delphian – and we believe that increased nutrition and healthy food will enhance our student’s experience while attending school here.  You can view the ever-changing menu provided by Sage Dinging here. How the Delphian Curriculum Works

June 30, 2013

At the Delphian School, we have gone beyond the average high school educational paradigms and developed a new and effective approach to education.  Our students not only learn new topics, they retain this information even after the appropriate test has been taken.

The school was developed by a group of educators who saw that conventional “good schools” were failing the many bright students who passed through their doors.  These educators formed the goal to empower their students to take responsibility for their own education – and for their own lives. trev_w_students_7351

Delphian is a unique environment which empowers students by first teaching them the basics of learning itself.  After this is done, students are actively engaged in studying at their own pace through their academic pursuits.  In order to help students retain information learned, they are encouraged to build clay models, discuss, and get involved in the practical application of what they are learning.

The ways in which the academic information students learn can be molded into real world application are as varied as our students.  For example, one student worked with others this last spring to build a new playground on the school premises.  Another student utilized the trigonometry he learned to build a skateboard.

Teachers at Delphian don’t lecture at students.  They help individual students working at their own pace to move through their studies and sort out difficulties or confusions.  Each class is relatively small as compared with your average public high school.  This ensures personalized attention for each student.

Because it is a boarding school environment, students have the opportunity to become involved in more activities than another type of school may offer.  There are many extra-curricular activities offered at the Delphian school, from art classes to choir to sports.  Students are also encouraged to pursue their own projects and to work with other students on projects.

One recent graduate said: “I never expected that I could become so capable in only four years.  For the change I went through, four years was such an incredibly small period of time.   Even though the experience is one I can’t fully put into words, I guess one of the best ways to describe it would be to say that Delphian challenged me to challenge myself – because no one else was making me do anything.  That determinism was my own.” – Ian Carberry

Another graduate said:  “Looking back on my Delphian experience, I can see that I have done some amazing things.  I never would’ve believed when I first arrived here that I could direct a play, or help plan a trip to Europe, or be able to make an entire yearbook.  I also never thought I would be able to graduate from Delphian.  I am proud to say that I have done all of these things.

“I arrived at Delphian a small boy.  I am proud to say I leave Delphian as a grown and capable person with the confidence to accomplish anything.” – Zack Bittner

Delphian Summer Program

March 25, 2013

In the Delphian summer program, we offer new students a unique opportunity to work on a one-on-one basis as needed on an academic program tailored just for them.

After a student has mastered the basic courses and classes we offer (which encompass the subject of how to study) they can brush up on any topic of study they feel weak on, start on advanced studies in a variety of subjects, or take the opportunity to study new subjects.  We offer over 250 courses and classes every summer.

Not do we provide academic fodder for our students, we provide weekend activities both off and on campus.  These activities range from white-water rafting to camping, from shopping to hiking.

We are home to students from many countries other than the United States – like Japan, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, Italy, Germany, Canada, Austria, France, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Turkey, Brazil, Philippines, Australia, South Africa, Switzerland, and Russia.  Our students get the opportunity to experience a variety of cultures and make friends from all around the world.

Additionally, our program for beginning ESL is available during the summer program.  This gives English as a second language students the opportunity to learn the language, and learn the unique study techniques Delphian offers.  It also gives students who are just learning English the opportunity to talk with native speakers, while involved in every day and after school activities.

The summer program is an opportunity for students to learn about the Delphian School, to meet children from all around the world, to learn about new cultures, to learn new languages, to discover new academic topics, and to have plenty of fun while doing it.

First Day of School – What does this mean to us?

August 31, 2010

Delphian School began as the dream of a small group of educators in the early 1970s to build a new kind of learning environment. Dr. Alan Larson, the Founding Headmaster of the school and several of his colleagues dedicated themselves to the goal of reversing the downward trending standards in education.

Within a close-knit community and lively campus environment, Delphian students are given highly personal attention from instructors, an individual academic program and a focus on demonstrated competence rather than memorization of facts or time spent in class. Students learn to not only understand what they study, but also to become competent in the use of logic and reason.

Delphian School’s mission is to empower young people with effective study skills, a solid academic foundation, a strong sense of personal integrity and a wide range of abilities.

More broadly, its mission is to send forth responsible, capable individuals who can help build a better world.
