Why Choose a Boarding School?

November 15, 2013

Many parents worry about sending their child to boarding school.  It’s a difficult decision for any family to make.  However, there are many statistics to encourage any parent to consider Delphian’s boarding school program.  Here are just a few facts about boarding schools:Delphian Building

  • According to a study done on boarding schools by The Association of Boarding Schools, 91% of students report that their boarding school is academically challenging.  This is more than both public schools (50% of student found them academically challenging) and private day schools (70% of students for them academically challenging). The Delphian program requires graduates to meet a very specific set of graduation requirements which includes life skills, practical application of academic information learned at school, as well as a deep understanding of that information.
  • 75% of students report that the peers with which they surround themselves at boarding school help to motivate them.  Only 49% of students could say this of public school.
  • 77% of students say their boarding school provides them with opportunities for leadership.  60% said this of their private day school, while only 52% of students said this regarding their public school. At Delphian, we provide opportunities for leadership and participation in student led activities to students and even to alumni.  Additionally, graduates of Delphian must have competently held a position of trust and responsibility in one of these groups.
  • Students at boarding schools devote more time to homework and extracurricular activities than those students attending a public or private day school.
  • Graduates of boarding schools are 11% more likely to achieve greater career advancement than graduates of public schools.

Not only do our students have more opportunity for advancement in life than students in other schools, at Delphian we help our students focus on their communication with family.  We ensure our students keep in close touch with their family while they are at school, so that home visits are wonderful for our students, their parents, and their siblings.  For more information about our program, visit www.Delphian.com.

Put Ethics and Integrity at the Center

December 4, 2009

Ethics and integrity orient every aspect of one’s activities and relationships. In education, they have a particularly pivotal role. Even the best of programs can fail if these fundamentals receive little attention. Having vast amounts of information at one’s fingertips doesn’t ensure one has been well educated; much less that one will be successful in life.

A successful life demands integrity, along with the use of logic and reason, in determining right and wrong. That’s why you will see courses, activities and projects interwoven throughout the curriculum that strengthen honesty, accountability and character. We call it developing backbone and it is central to the success of The Delphi Program.

Apprenticeships

October 5, 2009

With Delphi’s emphasis on the importance of practical application of academics, apprenticeships offer students an opportunity to gain both experience and exposure in areas of interest. At the Delphian School, Upper School students who have chosen areas of specialization are expected to spend time “in the field,” whenever possible.

Apprenticeships are arranged through Delphi’s Department of Professional
Development and can be either off-campus or on-campus. The apprenticeship program allows students to try possible career choices in a real-world environment while at the same time learning skills and knowledge from professionals in the field.

Students have had apprenticeships with professionals in a wide variety of fields, including veterinary medicine, law enforcement, software development, network management, film production, performance arts, computer graphics, music production, politics, medicine, marketing, equestrian care, counseling and wildlife management.

By the time a student graduates from the Upper School, well over 1,000 hours will have been spent on projects, field activities and/or apprenticeships.

Drama

September 28, 2009

Delphi’s Upper School Drama Department produces two major annual productions (one for Thanksgiving and one for Parents Weekend), as well as several other performances produced throughout the school year. Student involvement goes well beyond acting. Student participation includes set design, choreography, music composition, assistant directing, and even playwriting.

Recent productions from the Delphi Upper School Drama Department include Cyrano Debergerac, Footloose, Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, Pride & Prejudice, The Philadephia Story, Moliére’s The Flying Doctor, and O’Henry’s The Gift of the Magi.

Delphi’s Middle School Drama Department produces one major annual production at Parents Weekend. Even at the Middle School level, student involvement extends beyond acting. Middle School students participate in set design, backstage props, lighting and sound, and may assist in directing. The purpose of the Middle School Drama Department is to produce plays that challenge each student’s skills and ready them for participation in the Upper School plays.

Recent productions from the Delphi Middle School Drama Department include Jerome Lawrence’s Inside a Kid’s Head, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, selected tales from The Arabian Nights, and Booth Tarkinton’s Monsieur Beaucair.

Fine Arts

September 28, 2009

The Delphian School has an active fine arts program. Facilities include studios for art, pottery and ceramics, and photography. The school offers classes in drawing, painting, sculpting, pottery, photography and other special interest areas.

Because the essence of art is communication, we place special emphasis on exhibition. Delphi’s student Art Gallery is always in flux; on a stroll through the exhibit one can find photography, mixed media, graphic drawings in pencil or charcoal, paintings in many mediums from watercolor to oil, sculptures, pottery, haiku, and many other wonderful and creative displays of student work.

All Delphi art students are encouraged to participate in local shows and competitions, and many award-winning pieces can be found on display in our gallery.

Delphian School Hosts Turkish Dignitaries

August 12, 2009

On July 31, the Delphian School hosted two Turkish parliamentarians, Mr. Engin Altay and Mr. Metin Ergun. They toured the school with Assistant Headmaster Mark Siegel, and they met with a number of Delphian students and faculty members.

Mr. Altay and Mr. Ergun were invited to the United States under the auspices of the International Visitor Leadership Program of the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The Mississippi Consortium for International Development arranged their program on the U.S. political process.

While their 21-day visit to the United States focused on the American political process, they also wanted to visit a school. The World Affairs Council of Oregon, facilitating the International Visitor Leadership Program locally, selected the Delphian School in Sheridan. Upon their arrival, the visitors were briefed on the school’s unique educational program based on the educational philosophy of L. Ron Hubbard, and then given a tour of the school to see it in action.

Mr. Altay told a group of upper school students that he spoke with some authority on the subject of schools and education, as he had been a teacher and school principal in various state-run primary education schools in Turkey from 1986 to 2002. He told the students that Delphian is successful because of the challenges and tough goals that it sets for all students.

Mr. Ergun remarked that he liked the way the students gained leadership experience by working in various positions of responsibility throughout the school. He and Mr. Altay received copies of Mr. Hubbard’s book on study, Learning How to Learn, to take home with them.

Assistant Headmaster Mark Siegel said, “The students and I enjoyed this unique opportunity. We learned more about Turkey and our guests learned first-hand about our innovative educational approach. Our guests really enjoyed their lively interaction with the students, and the students wished our guests could have stayed longer!”

The Delphian School is Oregon’s premiere international K-12 day and boarding school. Living and studying within a close-knit community and lively campus environment, Delphi students receive highly personal attention from instructors as they progress through a challenging academic program that focuses on demonstrated competence rather than memorization of facts or time spent in class. Students learn to not only understand what they study, but also to become competent in the use of logic and reason.

As part of a student body that takes a highly active role in all school activities, students will hold positions of increasing responsibility and learn their own lessons about ethics, integrity and leadership. All these ingredients then come together to make a rich and rewarding launch into life.

The Delphian School might be considered a ‘professional’ prep school—that is, professional preparation for life. All student programs lead to the deliberate and professional pursuit of goals, whether the goal is to be a computer programmer, athlete, physicist, or writer; and whether it requires further college or professional school training or allows students to jump more directly into their field or into entrepreneurial work. Given the exponential growth in technology and the resulting demand for the ability to assimilate new knowledge, we know students need to be able to continue learning for the rest of their lives. They graduate from Delphi prepared for that future.

Students often consider The Delphian School quite a challenge, but a great deal of fun can be had amidst hard work and honest camaraderie. When this is combined with the practice and expectation of thinking for oneself and being fully responsible for one’s successes and failures, the stage is set for an extraordinary educational experience.

The school owes a debt of gratitude to American philosopher and educator L. Ron Hubbard, whose extensive writings include many treatises concerning education and career preparation, as well as the development of responsibility and ethical strength. It was through application of the ideas in these materials and the trial-by-fire of real classrooms that the philosophy of the school came to maturity.
