Co-Curricular

November 5, 2010

Because there is so much to do in acquiring a full education, physical and aesthetic activities are made a definite part of the Delphi Program so they don’t get slighted. Accordingly, Delphi students enjoy a wide variety of elective activities outside the classroom every weekday afternoon. We refer to these regularly scheduled afternoon classes as “Co-Curricular” as they include subjects we consider essential to a well-rounded educational experience.

All students participate in both sports and art either as part of a group or individually. Since we encourage our students to do everything they do as professionally as possible, these activities lead inevitably to participation in some public demonstration of skill. For sports, it is through interscholastic competitions or individual sporting meets. In the arts, it may be through choir and instrumental performances, plays, or painting and ceramic exhibits.

Co-Curricular activities may include music, art, ceramics, drama, computers, creative writing, video production, photography, woodshop, yoga, weightlifting, and a variety of interscholastic sports such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball and tennis.

Delphi’s extensive co-curricular program gives balance and rhythm to the curriculum.

The Delphian School: An Oregon Boarding School with a Personal Approach

September 29, 2010

Although we have many day students, living on campus adds an extra dimension to the Delphian Program.  Our boarding students form the core of the Delphian School community, gaining independence as they learn cooperation, putting knowledge gained in the classroom to immediate use, and increasing their responsibility for themselves and others.  In a boarding environment, there is always someone nearby to help, no matter what problem a student faces.  In our close, supportive community, lifelong friendships are made.  And despite the distance factor, we repeatedly hear from parents of boarding students and the students themselves that their parent-child relationship actually grew stronger and closer during the student’s time at Delphian.

In 2003, the Art and Science Group conducted a nationwide survey of over 2,700 high school students and adults regarding their experiences in high school and their lives since. The survey found that, compared to day students, boarding students:

Fine Arts

September 28, 2009

The Delphian School has an active fine arts program. Facilities include studios for art, pottery and ceramics, and photography. The school offers classes in drawing, painting, sculpting, pottery, photography and other special interest areas.

Because the essence of art is communication, we place special emphasis on exhibition. Delphi’s student Art Gallery is always in flux; on a stroll through the exhibit one can find photography, mixed media, graphic drawings in pencil or charcoal, paintings in many mediums from watercolor to oil, sculptures, pottery, haiku, and many other wonderful and creative displays of student work.

All Delphi art students are encouraged to participate in local shows and competitions, and many award-winning pieces can be found on display in our gallery.
