The Teaching Philosophy at Delphian

At the Delphian School, our goal is to send forth responsible, capable individuals who can help build a better world.  It might be trite to say, but today’s children are mankind’s future.  According to our assistant headmaster, Mark Siegel, every child has genius within them and has the capacity to change the world,

While this may seem an unreasonable expectation, consider these statistics:

At the age of 5, 100% of students believe they can and will change the world.  By the age of 9, that number reduces by half.  By the age of 16, only 2% of students believe they are geniuses and can change the world.

Additionally, young people are indeed changing the world every day.  Consider Malala Yousafzai who began supporting education in Pakistan and spoke out against the Taliban at only 15 years old.  Consider 15 year old Jack Andraka who developed a method for detecting pancreatic cancer. Consider Kaitlin Brand, a 16 year old who shared her personal message about her mother’s suicide with the world and encouraged all watchers to get help if they are considering such a drastic measure.

These young people, along with many, many more around the world are not only brilliant, they are changing the world.  The goal at Delphian is to bring out the genius in all of our students.  Each and every student who graduates from our school has the tools and capacity to build a better world.

How Delphian School Fosters Confidence and Physical Agility (and fun!)

March 31, 2012

Delphian Student at Mt. BachelorDelphian has a long tradition of fostering a love of skiing and snowboarding in our student body.  Our ski trips offer a great opportunity for the students to gain confidence in his/her physical agility and strength while enjoying the beauty of Oregon’s Cascade mountains.

Our ski trips are open to all elementary, middle and upper school students.  Our first ski trip of the school year is typically to Mt Hood Meadows. The final ski trip of the year is to Mt. Bachelor in Bend, Oregon.

Students will stay in rented vacation homes in Sun River, Oregon (about 30 minutes from Mt. Bachelor). sunriver vacation home

All students new to the sport (and any who may want to brush up on their technique) are given the opportunity to sign up for a lesson with the resort.  After the lesson our Delphian staff skiers and snowboarders are there to give additional help and supervision on the slopes.

Students ski for two days at Mt. Bachelor Resort.  After dinner on Monday evening, students typically enjoy the private use of Mavericks, an exclusive club at Sun River.  Students are able to do indoor rock climbing, play basketball, swim or play games in the pool or “surf” on the “Flowrider”.  On the final morning, students pack up and clean the houses in preparation for our return to Delphian. It’s always one of the highlights of the year!

Student Blogs: Mariandrea – Getting Close to Graduation

July 29, 2010

As the year is coming down to its final months, the pressure is on for all of the seniors. We are all working hard to graduate.  (At Delphian, you don’t just graduate at the end of the school year; you have to achieve a whole list of graduation requirements that aren’t just academic but address areas of responsibility, integrity, leadership and application of everything you’ve learned at the school.  So it’s a lot of work to make sure you’ve actually proven that you have completed all of those graduation requirements.)

Spring Break happened two weeks ago and the seniors that are trying to graduate had the option to stay at the school during the break and get ahead on their studies. For those ten days we studied about ten hours a day and worked with staff at the school for two. It was a good push made by us all and it was also a lot of fun. After the break it was time to start working even harder; the time is ticking away and we need to really get moving. Right now the focus is on academics and really working hard.

One thing that makes Delphian’s senior class different from any other school is that we become like a really close family. We support each other through the good and the bad. We might get in little disagreements, but we work hard together to make everyone’s goals. Each individual in the senior class is recognized and acknowledge when they graduate. Every senior will make a speech the day they complete Form 8 (12th grade) sharing their accomplishments and achievements. Although we are a tight group, every single person is as important as the next, and we want everyone to make it.

As the time for me to graduate approaches I’ll make sure to post more updates.  That’s all from the hill for now.
