Delphian Creates Artwork for The Portland Youth Philharmonic

This week Delphian Elementary and Lower School students attended a concert given by the Portland Youth Philharmonic. The students got acquainted with the different musical instruments used by a symphony orchestra and listened to the orchestra perform Mussorgsky’s famous suite, “Pictures at an Exhibition.”

Delphian School was one of several schools that were given the opportunity to paint a picture to go with a selected movement of the epic suite, which is a representation of pictures the composer saw at an exhibition. Delphian School created a painting for the movement “Ballet of the Unhatched Chicks.”

The schools’ pictures were put on stage before the orchestra played each movement, and the respective school was acknowledged for its contribution. “What was the most fun,” noted Joelle Rothe, Elementary School Head, “was watching the young painters become so excited at seeing their art on stage in front of hundreds of students.”
